The St. Bernard’s Girls Gaelic team set off for Woodlands Playing Fields on a bright Wednesday afternoon for the Cumman na Bunscoil League. The girls first game was against neighbours, St. Ita’s, and the girls started brightly with a goal from Ava- Rose. St. Ita’s took over for the rest of the first half to go in at half time a few points up. The 2nd half started the same as the first with a goal from Eva followed by a point from the boot of Ava-Rose – this after some great play by Eloise and Isla in midfield. However, the girls left themselves too much to claw back and in the end, lost out by 4. In their 2nd game against St. Bride’s, the girls started off slowly falling behind by two goals. But resolute defending from Grace and Niamh at the back as well as some super saves from Farrah, they managed to keep St. Bride’s at bay. Tara and Eliza worked through the oppositions defence to create a scoring opportunity for Tara, which she took with aplomb. On the next kickout, buoyed by her previous point, Tara again got on the ball and kicked a brilliant point. Despite the girls best efforts, they left took much to do and ran out of time for a comeback. In the 3rd and final game, the girls played against local rivals, St Michaels. The girls started brilliantly with a flurry of scores from Annie, Ava-Rose and two from Ruby, which left the girls in a healthy position at half time. At the start of the second half, ably assisted by the wind, St Michaels got a foothold in the game with an early goal and flurry of points but up stepped Aoife, who with her calm demeanour, settled the backline again to gain control of the game again. Some excellent link up play from our midfielders and forwards led to another goal from Eva and a brilliant point for Ruby. But just as St Michael’s thought the comeback was on, Annie went on a mazy run through their defence to finish with style into their net.
